Premarital screening in the UAE now includes hundreds of genetic conditions: what changed
From a few tests to hundreds
Premarital screening in the UAE used to focus on infectious diseases and a small set of inherited conditions. From January 2025, genetic testing became part of the official premarital screening for UAE nationals. Couples can now be tested for hundreds of genetic conditions that could affect future children.
Emirates Health Services runs the programme at dozens of health centres across the emirates. Blood samples from both partners are analysed; results usually come back within about two weeks. MOHAP states that genetic testing covers hundreds of genes and hundreds of conditions. Most couples are found to be genetically compatible. When both partners carry a change in the same gene, they are offered genetic counselling so they can understand the implications and options.
What the screening involves
- Blood samples from both partners
- Results within about two weeks
- Genetic counselling offered when both carry a change in the same gene
What that means for you
If you are planning to marry and are a UAE national, you will be offered the expanded screening. The aim is to give couples information, not to block marriage. Counselling helps explain what results mean and what choices exist. Read more about genetic counselling in the UAE, or browse our health blog for related topics. Your doctor or the centre where you are tested can give you advice for your situation.
Where to get tested
Emirates Health Services runs premarital screening at dozens of health centres across the emirates. MOHAP and EHS publish guidance on which centres offer the full genetic panel. Couples are encouraged to book in good time before the wedding so that results and any follow-up counselling can be completed.
