What the new newborn genetic screening in Abu Dhabi means for parents

A new option at birth

Abu Dhabi has introduced a voluntary genetic screening programme for newborns that looks for hundreds of treatable conditions. If your baby is born at a participating hospital and you consent, a cord blood sample is taken and analysed. The idea is to spot certain genetic conditions early so families can get information and support sooner.

According to the Department of Health Abu Dhabi, the programme uses whole genome sequencing and can screen for more than 800 treatable childhood conditions. The Emirates Genome Council endorsed the programme in March 2025. In the first phase it is offered at a small number of maternity hospitals and is available to UAE nationals and children of Emirati mothers born in Abu Dhabi. Results are returned within about three weeks, and families of babies who need follow-up are referred to genetic counselling and specialists.

Who can take part?

Participation is voluntary. Eligibility in the first phase:

  • UAE nationals and children of Emirati mothers born in Abu Dhabi
  • Birth at a participating maternity hospital
  • Parental consent

What parents can do

If you are expecting and want to know whether the test is offered at your hospital, ask your obstetrician or the maternity unit. If your baby has a positive result, the programme is designed to connect you with counselling and care. For more on how genetic counselling works in the UAE, see our article on genetic counselling. To find a clinic or specialist near you, you can search by location and service.

Where to learn more

Official information on the newborn screening programme is published by the Department of Health Abu Dhabi and the Emirates Genome Council. If your hospital is not yet part of the first phase, eligibility may expand in later phases. Parents who have already had a baby with a genetic condition may find it useful to ask their care team about counselling and support options.
