Genetic counselling in the UAE: what it is and when you might need it
Not a test, but a conversation
Genetic counselling is a session (or several) with a trained professional who explains what genetic results mean, what options you have, and what you might do next. It is not a test. It is a conversation so you can make informed decisions. In the UAE, genetic counselling is increasingly offered when newborn or premarital screening results need explanation.
The Emirates Genome Council and health authorities have expanded genetic programmes that refer families and couples to counselling. Paediatricians and other specialists are trained to provide or arrange it. If you receive a letter or result that says "genetic counselling recommended", that usually means booking a session to go through the result and your questions. Counsellors do not tell you what to do; they help you understand the information.
When it might be suggested
- After a newborn screening result
- After a premarital screening result
- Because of family history of genetic conditions
